Daniel’s Prayer Excerpts from Daniel 9.

“Lord, you are great and awesome; you are God. You keep your promise of love with all who love and obey you. But we have sinned and done wrong! We have been wicked and have rebelled. We have turned away from your commandments. We have ignored the prophets that spoke in your name to our kings, princes and fathers, and to all the people of the land.

“Righteous Lord, we are covered with shame. Because of our unfaithfulness to you, we have been taken from Jerusalem and Israel and scattered across foreign lands. But the Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled. We have disobeyed. We have not kept the laws he gave us through the prophets. All Israel has broken your law and turned away, refusing to obey you.

“That is why all the harsh judgments written down by Moses have been poured out on us. You have done what you said you would do. You have brought upon us great disaster. Yet we have not sought your favor by turning from our sins and paying attention to your truth.

“Lord God, you made for yourself an honored name that endures to this day by miraculously bringing your people out of Egypt to the Promised Land. In keeping with all your acts of goodness, turn your anger away from Jerusalem, your city, your holy hill. Our sins and the evil of our forefathers have made Jerusalem and your people an object of disgust far and wide.

“Now, our God, hear my prayers. For your sake, look with favor on your empty temple. O God, give ear and hear. Look and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not ask because we are good, but because of your great mercy. O Lord, listen and forgive! O Lord, act! Do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.”
