Nebuchadnezzar Goes Crazy • Based on Daniel 4.
I, King Nebuchadnezzar, am happy to tell the people of Babylon about the miraculous wonders that God has done for me.
I had a terrible nightmare. I saw a huge tree in the middle of the land. It touched the sky. It could be seen all over the earth. It was beautiful and full of fruit. Animals lived under it, birds nested in it.
An angel called out: “Cut it down! Chop off the branches! Let the animals flee and the birds fly off. But let the stump remain in the ground. Let the man be drenched with dew, make him live with animals. Let his mind be changed to an animal’s, until seven times have passed. This is from God, who gives kingdoms to anyone he wishes, even the lowliest of men.”
I called upon Daniel to explain the dream. He told me, “The tree you saw is you, O king! You have become great and powerful; your greatness has grown until it reaches the sky, and your rule extends across the earth. You will be driven away from people and will live with animals; you will eat grass like cattle and be drenched with dew. Seven times will pass until you admit that God Most High is over the earth’s kingdoms. The command to leave the stump means that your kingdom will be returned to you when you admit that Heaven rules. Turn away from your sins; do what is right. Be kind instead of wicked. Perhaps then your prosperity will continue.”
A year went by. One day, as I was overlooking Babylon from my palace balcony, I said, “This is the great Babylon I have built by my own mighty power. Babylon glorifies me and my majesty!”
But a voice came from the sky, “Today your royal authority is taken from you. You will live with the animals; you will eat grass like cattle. Seven times will pass until you admit that the Most High is over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone He wishes.”
Immediately it all happened. But at the end of that time, I raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity returned. Then I praised the Most High God; I honored and glorified him who lives forever.
God’s kingdom is forever! He does as He pleases with the powers
of heaven and the peoples of earth. I was restored to my throne and
became even greater than before. I praise, lift up and honor the King
of heaven. All he does is right, all his ways are just. Those who walk
in pride God is able to humble.
